Beware Of The Royal Solaris

Went to RS in Cancun from July5 thru July 9,2004. Definitely not our best trip to Mexico. When we arrived at the hotel, they put us in a small dining room with clerks and a bartender. The bartender was needed when they explained to us that they over-booked and did not have a room for us. I had called from the states 4 days prior to request a non-smoking room. They would not even confirm our reservation, now I know why. The manager (Alfredo) promised us a room the next day if we would go to the Hotel Sierra for 1 night. We also got him to promise a steak and lobster dinner. They sent us and 2 other couples to the Sierra (definitely a lesser resort). We called at 1:00 the next afternoon to confirm our room at 3:00. We were told that we wouldn't have a room until the 3rd day. We called Travelocity to file a complaint ($50 in long distance fees). They finally sent a shuttle after we called the manager 2 more times. They did give us a deluxe ocean front room with a king sized bed on the top floor. The view was outstanding!!! Service was average, except for Juan in the Marco Polo restaurant. He was the best waiter we have ever had the privilege of meeting!! Do not expect to be waited on at the pool or beach, service is not available. Make sure to take an insulated mug to keep the tiny watered down drinks from melting too fast. Tip the bartenders and you can have premium liquors instead of bar stock...
